George J. Colangelo, age 91, of Washington Twp., Gloucester County, NJ, husband of the late Mary F.(nee Viscomi), died Tuesday October 11, 2011 in Manor Care in Washington Twp.

Born in Glassboro, NJ, he was a lifelong resident of Glassboro and graduated from Glassboro High School in 1939, where he played football for the Bulldogs. George worked as a driver/salesman for Jewel Tea Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1978. He was a member of Glassboro VFW #679 and St. Bridget's Church where he was past president of Holy Name Society. He was a former member of Knights of Columbus and St. Anthony Beneficial Society. George also served Glassboro as Welfare Director for many years. He loved to go deep sea fishing and crabbing and spent a lot of time in his vegetable and flower gardens, where he raised hybrid roses.

George served with the U. S. Army during World War II as a member of the 1st Cavalry Division in the Southwest Pacific, served in Australia and New Guinea and was involved in the invasions of the Admiralty Islands, Leyte, Luzon and on to Manila in the Philippines. His unit was the first to enter Tokyo, Japan.

Predeceased by brother Nicholas and 2 sisters, Mary Esgro and Elsie Colangelo.

Surviving are a son George F. and his sister Polly Graumann.
